| Bodhgaya is the most appealing holy sites related to the life of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. It is a serene little village, where Prince Siddharth’s long quest of seeking the truth was fulfilled after years and there began the divine saga of Lord Buddha. Bodhgaya is not merely an archaeological site, but more of a Buddhist working and studying center. Its importance lies in the historic fact that here under the Bodhi tree Buddha achieved enlightenment. The Mahabodhi temple, erected by Ashoka, marks this holy spot. The red sandstone slab under the Bodhi tree is said to be the throne on which Buddha sat. A number of countries like Japan, Burma, China, Sri Lanka, Korea, Nepal, etc., where Buddhism is an important faith, have built their respective monasteries in Bodhgaya. They offer different architectural styles to the tourists. Thousands of Buddhist pilgrims and tourists from all over the world throng to Bodhgaya every year. One may attend conventions, special meetings and discourses offered by several medical institutions. The Archeological Museum, Vajrasana, ancient Railings, Ratnagar, Lotus Tank are the other important places to visit. Near Bodhgaya, Gaya is an important pilgrim place for the Hindus.
There are a number of budget hotels and places of cheap accommodation in Bodhgaya. There are few mid-range and high-end hotels in Bodhgaya. Some foreign monasteries also provide accommodation to the tourists. Cost for accommodation is extremely fluid. But in the high season (December-March), it increases substantially.
