Hotels in Kumbhalgarh

Crowned at a strategic height of 3500 feet (1100 m) from the angle of traditional Rajput warfare, this hilly terrain has a majestic presence. This ultimate armour, as far as security from the enemy is concerned, is one of the 84 fortresses defending the sovereignty of Mewar. This is one of those exclusive 32 designed and built by Rana Kumbha himself. This fifteenth Century pride of Mewar, stands upon the citadel of an ancient civilization of second century A.D., established by a Jain descendant of India's Mauryan emperors. With its 36 km long wall and soaring towers, it is an impressive example of what man's determination, diligence and intellectual faculty san do.

The fort has a number of very interesting places to see. An octagonal room that is the witness of the birth of a legendary warrior king, Rana Pratap. A wonderful hall in which Prince Karan entertained the future Mughal emperor Shahjahan. Most of the chamber and the construction that has been fitted in the fort indicates of its being a warrior's hide out rather than a palace for luxury, such as the narrow staircases to defend unwanted entrants into the fort.

The fort being situated in rocky terrain is a wonderful base for daring trekkers. The 586 square kilometer Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife lover's paradise. The lack of motorable roads within the jungle gives that genuine feel of an unexplored jungle and adds to the wild experience. In the Kumbalgarh wildlife sanctuary you are likely to see sloth bear, wild boar, and four-horned antelope or scientifically bred crocodiles from the nearby lakes.

The Rathores of Ghanerao have opened up their castle constructed in 1603 for the hospitality of visitors to Kumbhalgarh.
