The colorful and vibrant Kerala festivals showcase the rich culture and traditions of the people of Kerala. Some of the significant Kerala festivals are

Onam – is one of the most important festivals of Kerala. Irrespective of religion, it is celebrated all over Kerala with much joy and enthusiasm. It is celebrated during the Malayalam month of Chingam which is between August and September.

It is believed that Onam is celebrated to mark the home coming of Mahabali, the king who ruled Kerala during the better times and was sent down to the infernal region or Patala by Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana.

The most important days of Onam are Uthradom and Thiruvonam days. On Thiruvonam every household hosts a grand feast.

Vallamkali or Boat Race – The festival of boat races is an archetypal Kerala festival. The festival is held in August in the Punnamada Kayal.

Vishu – is a Hindu festival is celebrated in the first month of the Malayalam calendar marking the beginning of a new year. The day begins by waking up in the presence of Kani. Kani includes gold ornament, white cloth, a measure of rice or paddy, bell metal mirror, flowers of the Konna tree, halved jack fruits, halved coconuts, yellow cucumber and two lighted oil lamps.

Mahashivrathri – is celebrated between February and March to commemorate the day on which Lord Shiva consumed poison to save the world from destruction.

Some of the other festivals of Kerala are Thiruvathira, Asthami Rohini, Christmas, Easter, Bakrid, Idul Fitr, Chandankudam at Beemapally.
