Introduction

Situated at a height of above 900 meters from the sea level, The Sabarimala Temple – Pathanamthitta is considered to be one of the most sacred temples of Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, who is believed to be the amalgam of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Lord Parasuram enshrined Lord Ayyappa at the foot of the Sabari Hills.

Sabarimala Temple – Pathanamthitta is located in the midst of the thick forest of the Sahyadri Mountains. It takes almost three days to reach the temple. Those who undertake the pilgrimage are expected to observe strict self discipline. Usually men who start on this pilgrim grow beard, observe fast for forty days, observe celibacy and say regular prayers.

Makara Valikku Day which is celebrated on January 14 is considered to be the most auspicious day of the Sabarimala Temple.

How to get there

The best route to travel to Sabarimala Temple is through Chalakkayam from where the pilgrims can reach the banks of the river Pamba by vehicle. Pampa is the main stop to go to Sabarimala, from where the temple is a trek of about 5 kilometers.
