Description
Hawa Mahal is a five storied pyramid like structure with 953 small intricately designed casements, balconies and arched roofs with hanging cornices. The main gate of the palace opens into a huge courtyard which has two storied buildings on three sides. The eastern wing of the palace has another three storeys. The small windows were constructed to circulate air throughout the year and make the palace naturally cool especially in the summer months.
The lattice worked or screened balconies were originally made for the women of the family. Women were strictly kept behind a veil and the latticed screen helped them to view the outside world but not be viewed themselves.
