Introduction
Built between 1728 and 1734 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, Jantar Mantar is one of the five astronomical observatories of India. The word Jantar Mantar is derived from a Sanskrit word which means magical device. The astronomical observatory was built to observe the movements of the sun, moon and planets.
Description
The instruments of the Jantar Mantar have specific functions. Some of the significant instruments are the Brihat Samrat Yantra Sundia, about 27 meters high is the most interesting instrument of the observatory. It helps to calculate local time based on the calculation that its shadow moves up 4 meters every hour.
Jai Prakash Yantra is another instrument with a marble hemisphere about 4 meters in diameter. It provides the exact position of the sun and calculates the time of a location.
The Dhruva Yatra locates the position of the 12 sun signs as well as the position of the Pole Star.
