Introduction

The Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur is one of the largest forts of Jodhpur. Originally called, Chintamani Fort, the Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 by Rao Jodha. The fort formerly had eight gates or Pols to control entry in to the fort. Now seven gates remain. The fort is built on a hilltop called Bakharchiriya. The fort is built at a height of 122 meters above the plain.

Description

The main entrance of the fort, Jai Pol was built in 1808 to commemorate the victory of Raja Man Singh over his enemy Jagat Singh of Jaipur. The western gate of the fort, Fateh Pol was built to honor and remember the recovery of fort by Ajit Singh from the Mughals. The Dedh Kangra Pol or the Lakhna Pol was built during the reign of Rao Maldeo. However, it was burnt down during Jaipur's attack in 1807. Next to the Lakhna Pol is the Amrit Pol. The Loha Pol or the Iron Gate bears the handprints of the 15 queens who performed sati on the funeral pyre of their husbands. The Suraj Pol or Sun Gate is one of the oldest gates of the fort where the flight of stairs leads to the Moti Mahal.

The fort has two magnificent temples, the Nagnechiji Temple and Chamunda Devi Temple.

The Moti Mahal also known as the Pearl Palace was built in the 16th century during the reign of Maharaja Sur Singh. Every ruler of Jodhpur has been crowed in the Moti Mahal.

The Khabka Mahal or the sleeping palace has two rooms, the Dipak Mahal and the Chandan Mahal.

The Jhanki Mahal or the palace of glimpses is the palace from where the women of the royal family could take a look at the outside world.

Phool Mahal or flower palace was constructed by Abhay Singh. It was used as hall of private audience.

Daulat Khana Palace houses interesting curios and the embroidered silk tent made for the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

Other smaller palaces in the Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur include Sheesh Mahal, Rang Mahal, Moti Vilas, Sardar Vilas, Umaid Vilas and Takhat Vilas. The Jaswant Thada Cenotaph is a must see in the Mehrangarh Fort.
