Introduction

Rajasthan, the desert state of India is endowed with beautiful landscape, colorful artistry, magnificent architecture and rich traditions. Rajasthan has a number of pilgrimage sites which are very popular among people of India and abroad.

Some of the well known pilgrimage sites in Rajasthan are

Dargah Sharif, Ajmer – Located at the foot of a barren hill, the pilgrimage site houses the mortal remains of Khawaja Moin-ud-din Chisti. The tomb, located in the centre of the courtyard has a marble dome and is surrounded by a silver platform.

Jain Temples, Ranakpur – Built in the 15th century, the Chaturmukh or four faced Jain Temple is dedicated to Jain Tirthankara Rishavadev. The Ranakpur Jain as it is also called was built during the reign of Rana Kumbha. Carved in amber stone, the temple is open on all four sides. The four entrances have four marble images of Jain Tirthankara Adinath.

Dilwara Temples, Mount Abu – Dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras, the temple was constructed between 11th and 13th century. There are many small temples within the complex of the Dilwara Temples, each of which are dedicated to different Jain Tirthankaras. The Lunvashi Temple is another important temple within the complex.

Laxmi Narayan Temple, Jaipur – Situated at the foot of Moti Dungri Fort, the temple is built in white marble. The images of Socrates, Confucius, Christ and Buddha are unique to the temple.

Brahma Temple, Pushkar – The Brahma Temple is the most significant temple in Pushkar. This temple is made of marble, decorated with silver coins and a silver turtle on its black and white floor. The four-headed idol of Brahma is beautiful.

Eklingji Temple, Udaipur – Built at a distance of 22 kilometers from Udaipur, the temple has 108 shrines made of marble. It is built on the banks of the Indersagar Lake.
