History

Rajasthan was ruled by the Rajputs since 700 AD. Rajasthan was an integral part of the Mauryan Empire. Until the reign of Akbar, Rajasthan had never been politically united. The unity did not remain for long as Mughal power began to decline 1707 onwards which led to the penetration of the Marathas in Ajmer. With the coming of the British the fate of Rajasthan underwent a severe change. Around 1817, the British took over Rajasthan. Post independence, erstwhile Rajputana was divided into 32 districts, 105 sub divisions, 241 tehsils and some small towns and villages.
