Mozambique

Mozambique has many stunning beaches, imposing colonial architecture and colourful local culture. Mozambique Island is worth a visit for its array of mosques, churches and a Hindu temple. For this reason, UNESCO has declared the Mozambique islands, a World Heritage Site.

The best time to visit Mozambique is during June to August. Diving or snorkelling in the crystal clear waters, the captivating beaches at Wimbi, Tofu and Barra or the Bazaruto Archipelago with great reefs are the major attractions in the country. Birdwatching is popular in Mozambique, especially in the southern part of the country. Similarly, the best time for birdwatching is in November and December. The Maputo Elephant reserve is the perfect place for bird watching.

After Cape Town and Rio, Maputo in Mozambique is the third most popular tourist destination in Africa. The tourist places in Maputo include the Botanic Gardens; the National Art Museum with a fine collection of Mozambique's best contemporary artists; and the vivacious Municipal Market famous for the fruits, vegetables, spices and basketwork. Beira is the second largest city in Mozambique that houses the old Mediterranean-style buildings. The Praça (main square), cathedral and Tchunga Moyo (brave heart) are other tourist destinations in Beira.

Pemba, a coastal town at the edge of a huge bay again boasts of some interesting buildings (especially in Baixa - the old town). Most tourists are in the city for its virgin sandy beaches - particularly Wimbi Beach (sometimes spelt Wimbe) - and the coral reefs. The water sports at Pemba are also equally captivating like diving, snorkelling, boating, fishing etc.
