Tunisia is one of the mega-cities in Africa as well as the world. The historical and cultural centre of Tunisia known as Medina dates back to 7th century AD. The Zitouna Mosque in Medina was rebuilt in the 9th century. The south-eastern beaches in Tunisia lure the tourists with their enchanting beauty.
The north of Tunisia has some of the best beaches including Ghar el-Melh, Tabarka and Bizerte. Tunisia is just waking up to the possibility of trekking. Camel trekking can be enjoyed at its beat at Zaafrane. The dune skiing and land yachting can be arranged in certain areas. Bird watching is popular in Tunisia with few resident species. It is also a haven for migratory birds, the Lake Ichkeul National Park being the prime venue.
Halfway between Kélibia and El-Haouaria is the relatively unheralded Carthaginian site of Kerkouane built in the 6th century BC; a museum that houses some interesting discoveries of the Woman of Kerkouane. The small town of El-Haouaria beneath the Cap Bon Mountain is a tranquil tourist spot with good beaches and the Roman caves on the coast.
Byrsa Hill gives a panoramic view of the peak. The L'Acropolium (Cathedral of St Louis) was built by the French in 1890 has now been restored and opened for public. Apart from this historic Cathedral, the National Museum stands at the back of the Cathedral. The Roman amphitheatre in The Temple of Saturn is another must visit.
Sidi Bou Saïd is a pretty village in which gleaming walls are dotted with the ornate, curved window grills. At Soussem, the lighthouse and the adjacent 9th-century fort are the major tourist attractions. The Ribat, a small square fort, was built in the late 8th century AD and features a round watchtower ideal for some panoramic views of the city. The Great Mosque, with its turrets and crenellated wall looks more like a fort. The Sousse Museum occupying the kasbah at the southwestern corner of the Medina has some of the most beautiful mosaics in the country.
The Dar Charait Museum in Tozeur is the only museum in the country, which has an extensive collection of pottery, antiques, an art gallery as a whole. Tozeur's Palmeraie is the second largest in the country with around 200,000 palm trees covering 10 sq kms.
