Hiiumaa possesses beautiful stretches of coast all along its territory. Kärdla within this coastal country is full of gardens and trees. There's a lighthouse at the northern tip of the peninsula that dates from 1874. The lighthouse is an important landmark in the town with a nearby memorial of the1994 Estonia ferry disaster. Hiiumaa's second largest town is Käina, near the shore of Käina Bay, which is also a major bird reserve.
Lahemaa National Park is Estonia's largest national park with numerous lakes, rivers and waterfalls. Waterfalls cascade down from a height of 56m (184ft) cliffs from the North Estonian limestone plateau known as the Glint. The two main attractions for the wildlife lovers are Koljaku-Oandu Reserve and Laukasoo Reserve. Saremaa is Estonia's biggest island in the south of Hiiumaa with some of the unspoiled rural landscapes. Half of the island is covered with dense forests. Viidumäe is a botanical reserve, which is home to rare plant species.
Estonia is ideal for bog walking, canoeing, sailing, rowing, diving as well as canoe building. Bird-watchers can enjoy at Matsalu Nature Reserve, which arranges day hikes. Another major bird watching destination is Käina Bay Bird Reserve with over 70 bird species. Estonia offers excellent winter sports like ski and snowboard at the Kuutsemäe Sports Centre and also snow-bike expeditions.
