History
There is not much known about the early history of Nauru and like many other islands in Pacific, the world came to know about it only in the last phase of 18th century. John Fern was the first westerner who saw this island and named it Pleasant Island, due to its pleasant climate. In the next few decades many colonies of Europeans established here. They introduced the islanders to gun and new diseases that destroyed their culture and reduced their population drastically. At the end of 19th century, some Britishers noticed the amount of solid phosphate here which was very much in demand in Europe. Mining was started that posed more dangers to local population. For the ownership of this island there was continuous struggle between Britain, Germany, Japan, and Australia. The country gained full independence in 1968, but European powers forsake their control on mining of phosphate only in 1970. In 1973, Australia, Britain, and New Zealand signed agreement to compensate the country for the devastation they caused before independence. Today, large amount of money is being used to rehabilitate the destroyed landscape.

Weather and Best Season to Visit
The climate of Nauru is tropical which is tempered by the sea breezes. Most of the rain takes place from November to February which is the time for westerly monsoon season. There is not much temperature differentiation during different seasons and temperature remains between 23ºC to 32ºC. Except the rainy season, you can go to Nauru anytime of the year.

Attractions
Yaren

Anibare Bay

Hotels do have bars and casino where you can empty your purse a bit. As the local population is too small to give a viable business opportunity, places to spend an eventful life is difficult to find. Fortunately, there is one cinema hall in the southern part of the Nauru.

Shopping
Nauru has many superstores that sell mostly imported goods and commodities. These are certainly costly and you would be better off looking for these items elsewhere if you do not require them.

WHERE TO STAY
There are only two hotels in Nauru and they are not cheap. Most of the commodities here are imported from outside and that makes most of the things costly. Staying even in the cheapest rooms can cost you something around US$30. Go up the ladder and costs can go manifold.

WHERE TO EAT

Like accommodation eating is also costly in Nauru. There is no special local cuisine that can be dished out to the travellers. Most of the restaurants would serve you Western and South East Asian cuisine.
