History of Akbar’s Tomb
Akbar often considered the greatest Mughal Emperor is a great builder himself and designed many artistic monuments in his kingdom. He founded the famous Fatehpur Sikri and designed the beautiful palaces. Akbar also designed palatial gardens, mansions and also his own tomb. He planned the tomb near the Yamuna River at Sikandra in the centre of a huge garden enclosed by high walls on all sides. However he failed to complete its construction which was later done by his son Jahangir.
Description of Akbar’s Tomb, Sikandra
Akbar’s Tomb at Sikandra is built in the Indo-Saracenic style with exclusive designs which include intricate carvings, and a huge gateway called Buland Darwaza modeled on the one at Fatehpur Sikri. The decoration on the gateway is unique and stands out for its exclusive mosaic patterns. The gateway is decorated with four minars which has intricate design on white marble with red sandstone.
The beautiful garden surrounding the tomb designed in the charbagh style enhances the beauty of Akbar’s tomb.
How to get there
Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra is not very far from the heart of the city of Agra and can be reached in any local conveyance. Taxis, rickshaws and buses are easily available.
