Agra is situated on the banks of the river Yamuna, between Mathura and Surajpur. Currently it is a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the most favorite tourist destinations especially for monuments like the Agra Fort, Taj Mahal and other architectural wonders.
History of Agra
It was originally a part of the Surasena Empire with Mathura as its capital. Sikander Lodhi, the then Sultan of Delhi made Agra his capital city in the 16th century. The founder of the Mughal Dynasty, Babar designed the first Persian Garden on the banks of the river Yamuna. Akbar, the grandson of Babar made Agra a commercially successful city and erected the imposing Agra Fort. Jehangir, Akbar’s son too built many beautiful palaces and forts. Shah Jahan is exceptionally well known for the marvelous mausoleum, the Taj Mahal he built for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
After the fall of the Mughals, Agra was taken over by Marathas and Jats and later by the British.
