Introduction to Tomb of Itimad Ud Daulah

Agra is known for its beautiful architectural wonders which represents and reminds us of its glorious past. Often considered a precursor to the Taj Mahal, the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is a drift from the traditional architecture of the Mughal Dynasty. It is the first tomb in India that is built in white marble.

History of Tomb of Itimad Ud Daulah

Mirza Ghiyas-ud-din popularly known as Ghiyas Beg was a poor merchant, who by sheer luck reached the court of the Mughal Emperor, Akbar. Ghiyas Beg with the help of hard work and dedication became a minister and a trusted treasurer in Akbar’s court. After Akbar’s death his son Jahangir became the Mughal emperor and made Ghiyas Beg his chief minister or Wazir. Ghiyas Beg was then honored with the title of Itimad-ud-Daulah meaning the pillar of the state.

Ghiyas Beg’s daughter, Mehr-un-Nissa grew up to be a very beautiful lady. She returned as a widow to live with her father in Jehangir’s court. Jehangir soon fell in love with her and married her. Her attractive personality was recognized by all and soon she was given the title of Nur Jahan meaning the light of the world.

Ghiyas Beg died in 1622. The tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is a highly ornate and represents Islamic architecture.

Description of Tomb of Itimad Ud Daulah

The tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah in Agra is built in pure white marble in an elaborate and extremely ornate building with a closed kiosk on top of the building. The four minarets are topped with small domes.

The pietra dura design representing cypresses, wine glasses and other intricate designs are considered extremely different from the usual architecture.

How to get there

The Tomb of Itimad Ud Daulah, Agra is situated on the banks of river Yamuna. Any local conveyance can be availed of to travel to the tomb. The nearest railway station is the Yamuna Bridge Railway Station. Agra is well connected with all other parts of the country. It is accessible by air from other tourist locations like Khajuraho, Varanasi and Delhi. Agra is connected by road as well. A choice of cars and taxis are available that ply between Agra and other major cities.
