Kalika Mata Temple of Chittorgarh is of immense historical importance. Located near Rani Padmini’s Palace it was built by Bappa Rawal in the 8th century dedicated to the Sun God. Ideally the Rajputs of Mewar worshipped Lord Shiva but their second deity of worship was Mahakali or Kalika. It was Allauddin Khilji who in one of his visits plundered the city and destroyed the temple but later in the 14th century, the Maharana Hamir Singh I reinstalled the idol of Kali when he regained power.
The Kallika Mata temple has five chambers. The temple walls are plain but the pelmets are adorned with lotus sculptures. The inner chamber of the temple houses the diety of Surya flanked by angles and consorts. The moon god is also depicted in sculptures on the wall that rises to the ceiling supported by pillars that are intricately sculpted and bracketed on the top. The architecture of the temple dates back to the 8th century during the Paramara period and it is the oldest temple of the fort.
Intricately decorated ceilings, sculptured pillars and designed doorways with panel frames features in its architectural splendor. While on a tour to Chittorgarh this 8th century temple should feature in the itinerary.
