Introduction to Laxmi Narayan Temple
The Laxmi Narayan Temple, popularly called the Birla Temple, situated in the western side of the Connaught Place was built by BD Birla in the year 1938.The temple is built in the dedication of the goddess of prosperity and good fortune. The deity presiding in the temple is Lakshmi Narayan, who is a manifestation of Lord Vishnu. The Lakshmi Narayan temple is a temple with many shrines, fountains and a large garden.
History of Laxmi Narayan Temple
This temple was built by the illustrious Birla family of Industrialists, who are known for many other temples all over India. It took about a time period of 6 years (1933-1939) to end the construction of the temple. The Birla temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi, on the condition that people from all stratum of society, all castes and untouchables would be allowed to enter the premises.
Description of Laxmi Narayan Temple
There are separate shrines in the Lakshminarayan temple, dedicated to Hindu Deities such as Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna and others. There is a secular shrine here at the temple, inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi where people from all caste and creed are allowed to enter. The Lakshmi Narayan Temple is adorned with circular ribbed patterns, typical of the Orissa style .During the Janmashthami celebrations, the temple is lit up and thousands of devotees come here to celebrate the occasion.
