Hawa Mahal is Jaipur’s exotic pink monument which offers a fabulous view of the city, its beautiful architecture, markets and on the whole, life outside the palace. Designed by Lal Chand Usta, Hawa Mahal has turned out to be synonymous with the city of Jaipur.
History of Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799. Popularly called the Palace of the Wind, Hawa Mahal is an essential part of the City Palace. It is an extension of the Zenana or the women’s chambers and offered a view of the daily life to the women of the palace who were otherwise not expected to go outdoors.
Description of Hawa Mahal
Hawa Mahal is a five storied pyramid like structure with 953 small intricately designed casements, balconies and arched roofs with hanging cornices. The small windows were constructed to circulate air throughout the year and make the palace naturally cool especially in the summer months.
The main gate opens into a huge courtyard which has two storied buildings on three sides. The eastern wing of the palace has another three storeys.

Hawa Mahal in Jaipur is well connected to other parts of the country. Delhi the capital of India is only 300 kilometers from Jaipur. It is accessible by road, rail and air. Airlines offer cheap fares to travel to Jaipur. Railways from different parts of the country travel to Jaipur. The Delhi-Jaipur National Highway is another means of reaching Jaipur.
