Jaisalmer emanates with the desert charm. The stretches of sand dunes, camel rides and the lingering ballads, the sound of the mandolin in the chilled desert nights recreates the medieval ambience of the land. In the middle of nowhere among the never ending sand dunes of Thar Desert, Jaisalmer celebrates the famous Desert festival. Tourists make it a point to visit Jaisalmer during the winter months, to enjoy the Jaisalmer nights steeped in Rajasthani culture. Tourist attractions in Jaisalmer rests generally on its Fort built of sand stone emanating the golden hue and merging with the arid stretches of desert all around.

The Jaisalmer Fort is one of the finest forts of India, rising in the middle of the Thar Desert that was built by Raja Jaisal in 1156. The Jaisalmer Fort built over 800 years with golden - yellow sandstone rests on the Trikuta Hill. Its 99 turrets, defends the old city, within its walls. It is the second oldest military fortress of Rajasthan. Located on the Trikuta Hill, it is one of the star attractions among the tourists.

Apart for the magnificent Jaisalmer Fort, Gadsisar Tank and Manak Chowk are the other two attractive places of Jaisalmer. The Gadsisar Tank was the main source of water supply to the city. In winters migratory birds flock to this pristine tank adding to the beauty of the place. If you want to get the oriental feel of the pulsating Rajasthani charm take the winding lanes flanked with the typical havelis that lead to the Chowk which remains abuzz.

Rajasthan is famous for its havelis. Wealthy merchants built Havelis, exhibiting Rajasthan architecture and a fair share of the havelis fall in the city of Jaisalmer. Patwon Ki Ji Haveli is an elaborately designed haveli that is situated in a narrow lane in Jaisalmer. There are six apartments in the haveli and the interiors have beautiful paintings and mirror works on the walls. While Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli was built by two architect brothers in the 19th century. One of them concentrated on the right and while the other concentrated on the left. The havelis are almost identical with very minute differences. They are profusely decorated with frescoes, murals and miniature art. Jharokas enhance of the beauty of the havelis. Salim Singh Ji Ki Haveli was built some 300 years ago. Salim singh’s mansion has an arched roof which is beautiful and was held by two carved brackets in the form of peacocks. Tazia Tower is a five-tiered tower rising from Badal Mahal. The balconies are exquisitely carved. The Muslim craftsmen built it.

The famous Desert festival organized by the tourist authorities in the months of January or February holds great tourist attractions in Jaisalmer. Rajasthani folk culture is promoted in this festival. Lingering ballads of valor and romance are sung. Men and women in traditional Rajasthani costumes dance to the tunes of traditional Rajasthani songs.
