Wealthy merchants of Rajasthan built gorgeous and elaborate havelis in the arid Thar Desert to add colors to their surroundings. Walking through the arid stretches of land it is a pleasure for the tired man to revel in the exquisitely designed mansions. These merchant villas are richly carved with murals and frescoes, miniature Rajasthani paintings grace its walls and the hanging balconies and jharokas add to its ornamentation. Patwon-Ji-Ki-Haveli
In the narrow lane of Jaisalmer stands the five-story haveli of Jaisalmer, the largest of its kind in the city. The haveli has six elaborately done apartments. Two of them are owned by the archeological survey of India while another two are private homes while the remaining two are craft shops. There are paintings on the walls of the havelis with some mirror work.
Salem Singh Ki Haveli
Salem Singh Ki Haveli is a 300-year-old haveli built by Salem Singh when he was the prime minister of Jaisalmer. Close to the hills the haveli is like a palace out of the Arabian Nights with beautiful arched roof and carved brackets resembling peacocks.
Nathmal Ki Haveli
Nathmal Ki Haveli was built by the two brothers who built mansions which appears identical but are different and are united by a common façade. It is an elaborately carved haveli with intricate designs all over the mansions. It is an amazing feat of craftsmanship of the artisans who worked flawlessly to erect such a massive edifice.
