In the narrow lane of Jaisalmer stands the five-storied haveli of Jaisalmer, Patwon-Ji-Ki-Haveli, the largest of its kind in the city. Walking through the arid stretches of land it is a pleasure for the tired man to revel in the exquisitely designed mansions. Wealthy merchants of Rajasthan built gorgeous and elaborate havelis in the arid Thar Desert to add colors to their surroundings. Guman Chand Patwa and his five sons constructed the elaborate five-storied haveli. He was a well-known merchant who traded precious metals like silver, gold and brocade.
The haveli has six elaborately done apartments. They are decorated intricately with Rajasthani art. The edifice is exquisitely chishilled with wall frescoes, pillared columns grace large corridors and the ceilings are elaborately designed. The artisans have painstakingly worked on the murals on the wall depicting village scenes and courtly life. Two of them are owned by the archeological survey of India while another two are private homes while the remaining two are craft shops. There are paintings on the walls of the havelis with some mirror work. One of the apartments of the haveli has been completely covered up with enrapturing murals.
A part of Patwon ki haveli is owned by the Archaeological Survey of India, a part of it is owned by a family and the rest of it is owned by families who run craft shops within the premises.
This massive mansion of Guman Chand Patwa and sons took around 50 years to be completed.
