Sanjay Gandhi National Park
Sanjay Gandhi National Park is one of the weekend getaways from Mumbai which was previously known as Borivali National Park and is one of the protected reserve forest located in suburban Mumbai. It can be easily reached by car and is only a few hours journey from the main city.
During your visit to the national park, you can have a look at the various types of flora and fauna and you can also enjoy the views of hills, forests, lakes, valleys, etc. The park is an ideal abode for different wild animals, which includes birds, mammals, reptiles and various other insects. You will also find some of the rare plant species in this park like teak, shisam, flame of the forest etc. You can put at the forest lodge or you can put at the different resorts and enjoy jeep safaris in order to have a look at the entire park.
Elephant Caves
If you are in lookout of some weekend getaways in Mumbai harbor then you can drop in at Elephant Caves. It is an island which is located in the Arabian Sea and it is a group of caves situated in Elephanta Island.
Elephant caves mainly consist of tow groups of caves. One which consists of five large Hindu caves and the other two are smaller Buddhist caves. The Hindu caves consist of sculptures of Hindu gods and goddess, depicting the Shaiva Hindu sect, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The caves dates back its origin during the 5th and 8th centuries and are rock cut architectures. Even though all the caves were painted, but now they have faded. This cave is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and is one of the world heritage sites.
Matheran
Matheran is the most beautiful hill station in Maharshtra and is one of the most preferred weekend getaways from Mumbai. It was discovered in 1850 by Hugh Poyntz Malet who was the collector of Thane district. This place was further beautified by Lord Elphinstone, who built a bungalow, mansion, lodge etc.
You can put at the various hill side resorts and enjoy the beauty and the tranquility of the place. If you wish you can also take a ride in the toy train and have a look at the entire hill station, which is covered with forest, lakes, plateaus etc. You can also drop in to shop various traditional items from the local markets and the best time to drop in is during October to May, when you can enjoy snowfall along with light rain.
